to Calcutta
On
Wednesday, 15th May, 2002 children from Primary 6, Largymore Primary
School, Lisburn, will watch their
money being transferred to Calcutta from Carryduff Branch of Northern Bank. The
children, who recently won the Amnesty International competition “ A Fairer
World” have now put their learning into action. Following a sponsored event,
the children discovered that they had raised sufficient money to purchase and
fully install a water purifying system for their friends in the
ABWU School for destitute children, Calcutta. Largymore is part of A Ray
of Hope, UNESCO Youth Ambassador for the Culture of Peace.
Mr.
Stewart, principal of Largymore, commented, “ this type of venture is a
valuable facet to the ethos of our school. To make friends overseas, and to be
fortunate to be in a position to assist them is indeed rewarding.” A
Ray of Hope’s liaison for India, Heather
Beattie, congratulated the children on their efforts and paid special tribute to
the Northern Bank for its support. “ We look forward to many successful joint
ventures in the years to come.” Don
McBurney, Director explained , “
this £5000 project, in its entirety, is the coming together of
6 companies and a school to assist the children of the ABWU School in
Calcutta. It is so pleasing when a unification of effort can have substantial
outcomes and for us to realise that diversity of culture is enrichment.” For
