BACKGROUND:

In Peru, the Ministry of Education (responsible for all State schools) does
not provide children with the elements necessary to carry out their studies.
Therefore, many children (particularly in the poorest rural areas) do not
attend school at all due to their families' lack of resources to purchase
these items.

In the above context, this proposal consists of supplying 606 schoolchildren
from four rural communities in the Department of Ayacucho, with the
necessary elements to attend the school term.(April-December 2001).

Each rucksack (for one child) is intended to contain the following items:

* 2 pencils
* 1 eraser
* 1 pencil sharpener
* 1 set of colour pencils
* 1 set of colour filter-tip pens
* 5 notebooks
* 1 ruler
* case for pencils, pens, etc.

Beneficiaries: 606 children

Costs:

1 rucksack (complete will all the items listed above):
US$ 7.50
Total cost: US$ 7.50 x 606: US$ 4,545.00
