Some
damper hollows occur within the woodland area of Coney Island and
contain species such as Marsh Marigold Caltha
palustrus, Yellow Flag Iris pseudacorus,
Meadowsweet Filipendula
ulmaria and Woody Nightshade Solanum
dulcamara.
In
1992, Large Bittercress Cardamine
amara, was recorded. However this was not found in 2000.
Fringes.
In some of the more sheltered sections along the southern half of the
island, Reed Phragmites australis
swamp has developed. These also contain much Indian or Himalayan
balsam Impatiens glandulifera, Hemlock
Water Dropwort Oenanthe crocata and
Nettle Urtlca dloica, together
with lower densities of species such as Great Willowherb Epilobium
hirsutum and Purple Loosestrife Lythrum
salicaria.
Other
areas.
There are several open areas around the island. One extends across the
island from east to west including the open area around the house. Along
the shoreline this area contains Himalayan Balsam Impatiens
glandulifera, Angelica Angelica
sylvestris and includes virtually the only extensive areas of
flowers on the island. The house clearing and also the open area around
the jetties at the southern end of the island are maintained as short
areas of amenity grassland.
