At
present the school has 220 girls distributed between forms 1-4. Our teaching
staff has now reached 9. Most of the subjects on the curriculu are being taught
which is a great improvement for the girls education.
Although
progressing, the school is certainly in the early stages of development.
Bandawe
Girls’ Secondary School does not have the facilities nor the
resources
of which many of it’s neighbouring schools have. As a boarding school, it has
inadequate accommodation for students.
At present some 150 students are sleeping in a hostel designed for a mere 64
students. The remaining girls are staying in the Primary School hostel which is
about 5 minutes walk away. It is not ideal.
The girls have 1 pit latrine for the whole school which is very unhealthy
healthy.
As the boarding school all the meals are cooked on a wood fire at a kitchen
close to the administration block. The Matron and cooks are dedicated and hard
working. The meals include nsima (staple
food), rice and beans, meat once a week and fish when it is available. The girls
have no dining hall so they eat outside. During the rainy season they eat in the
classrooms.
Electricity
was installed in April 2003. This is a great advance for the school and now the
girls can study without paraffin Tiri lamps as long as the electricity is
steady. There are sockets in all classrooms and there is a basic Science lab.
The Library is well stocked with books from abroad there are however not enough
bookshelves to hold the stock. The room is also very small. The girls are very
keen to read and the library is open everyday after school for reading and
leading books.
